Nylanderia pygmaea is an extinct ant species known only from Eocene Baltic amber . Workers are tiny at 1.5-1.6 mm total length, with brown coloration and shining cuticle . This species represents 0.3-3.6% of ant individuals in Baltic amber . It is the oldest definitive Nylanderia species in the fossil record . The genus Nylanderia includes many living species today, some of which are invasive tramp ants , but N. pygmaea went extinct millions of years ago and cannot be kept in captivity.
