Introduction
Holcoponera haytiana is a tiny, yellowish ant endemic to the island of Hispaniola (Haiti and the Dominican Republic) . Workers are the only known caste – the queen has never been described. They measure just 2.5 mm and stand out among related species for their brownish-yellow color and the more pronounced curve of the second gastric segment . Their body is mostly opaque with fine sculpturing. This leaf-litter dweller lives at elevations of 900–1,100 meters in forest and coffee plantation settings . First described in 1914,the species was recently moved from *Gnamptogenys* into *Holcoponera* based on phylogenetic research . The species has a very limited range and faces a real threat: widespread deforestation on Hispaniola has shrunk its habitat considerably, making it a conservation concern .
Quick Summary
- Difficulty: Hard
- Origin & Habitat: Endemic to Hispaniola, found only in Haiti (southeastern mountains near Jacmel) and the Dominican Republic (Barahona province). They live in leaf litter at elevations of 900–1,100 meters, in both forest and coffee plantations [2][4][3].
- Colony Type: Colony structure is not documented – only single workers have ever been collected. Based on related Ectatommini species, they likely form small colonies with a single queen, but this is unconfirmed.
- Size & Growth:
- Queen: Unknown – no queen has been described or measured.
- Worker: 2.5 mm [3]
- Colony: Unknown – only single workers have been collected in the wild [3]. Related leaf-litter ants typically form colonies of several dozen to a few hundred workers, but this is speculative.
- Growth: Unknown – likely moderate based on related species patterns.
- Development: 6–10 weeks (estimated from related Ectatommini species at optimal temperature) (Development time is an estimate since no direct data exists for this species.)
- Antkeeping:
- Temperature: Keep around 22–26°C. Their high‑elevation habitat (900–1,100 m) suggests they prefer cooler, moderate temperatures rather than typical lowland tropical heat. Provide a gentle gradient so they can choose [2][4].
- Humidity: High humidity is essential. These ants live in damp leaf litter in forest and coffee plantations
