Proceratium petrosum is a small, cryptic ant species in the subfamily Proceratiinae. Workers are typically 3-5mm in length , with a large, bulbous gaster that curves forward over the mesosoma . The head has large, convex eyes, and the body is dark brown to black . This species is found in tropical and subtropical regions, nesting in soil, under stones, or in rotting wood . Proceratium species are specialized predators that use their gaster to deliver venom to prey . Fossil records show related Proceratium species, with males measuring up to 7.5mm . They are known for their slow, deliberate movements and cryptic lifestyle .
