Archimyrmex smekali

Pendahuluan

Archimyrmex smekali is an extinct species of bulldog ant that lived during the Late Eocene epoch, approximately 42 to 49 million years ago . Originally described as Polanskiella smekali in 1983,researchers later moved it to the genus Archimyrmex based on morphological analysis . Fossils from the Ventana Formation in Neuquén Province, Argentina reveal a massive ant measuring about 3 cm in total length, with powerful mandibles nearly as long as its head and bearing 4 to 5 coarse teeth . The species possessed eight-segmented antennae, well-preserved compound eyes, and elongated wings that distinguish it from other Eocene ants found in the same deposits . As an extinct species known only from fossil impressions preserved in ancient swamp sediments, no living colonies exist today, and the species cannot be kept in captivity.
