Introduction

Formica gravida is an extinct ant species known only from fossil specimens preserved in Miocene-era deposits in Switzerland . The species was described by Oswald Heer in 1849 based on four specimens found in Oeningen. Based on fossil measurements, queens measured approximately 15mm in total length, with a thick swollen abdomen and very blunt apex . The specimens were pale yellow-brown in color . This species is related to Formica aethiops from Central Europe . As a fossil species that went extinct millions of years ago, no living colonies exist and no care information can be provided.
