Einleitung

Pachycondyla petiolosa is an extinct ant species from the Eocene period, approximately 48 million years old, discovered in the Messel Pit fossil site in Germany . This was a large, massive ant with queens measuring 20-22.5mm in body length . The species is known only from fossil specimens preserved in fine-grained sediment, making it impossible to keep or observe in captivity .
